Head two hours south of the capital Tirana, where Vlorë is tucked between the mountains and the shores of the Adriatic Sea. From the honeyed hues of the city’s Mediterranean-inspired architecture to the rugged beauty of the surrounding countryside, this is the heart of the Albanian Riviera, where unspoilt beaches and fascinating archaeological sites abound.

An intriguing mix of tradition and modernity, Kenya’s capital brings an unmistakable cultural buzz – you can visit its vibrant Maasai craft markets in the morning, then take an easy trip into the open grass plains of Nairobi National Park for an unforgettable glimpse of the country’s abundant wildlife.

Rouen, France

With 2024 marking 80 years since the D-Day Landings, Rouen is also an excellent base from which to pay tribute to the past. When Montenegrins voted for independence from Serbia in 2006, Podgorica became Europe’s newest capital. One of the European Capitals of Culture for 2024, Tartu lies two hours south of Estonia’s capital Tallinn. Visit in 2024 and the city will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the reconstruction of Stari Most. The bridge is a living monument to the original 16th-century monument, destroyed during the Bosnian War but rebuilt as a symbol of hope.

Make the trip to Mostar from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, where you can stay at Courtyard Sarajevo, with its impressive views of the city and mountains.

San Marino

2024 sees the first time that the Tour de France has its Grand Depart in Italy, passing through the microstate of San Marino as it travels from Florence to Rimini on the first stage. It’s the perfect excuse to visit an underrated travel gem, combining stunning medieval architecture in the city’s old town, epic mountain scenery, incredible shopping, and a vibrant cultural scene.

Stay in Florence, where the superb The Westin Excelsior, Florence is set on the banks of the Arno River, before following the Tour two-and-a-half hours to pretty San Marino.
